View Full Version : Elf sculpt
CandyCane

I decided to make a mache/clay sculpt of an elf this year. Here are a couple of pics of the very earliest stages. The first pic shows the carved wighead armature. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q77/Lauriebeast/Xmas%20projects/XmaselfDSCF0001.jpg
This second pic shows the first layer of Celluclay. This will form a good base for the air dry clay that I'll add to form all the features. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q77/Lauriebeast/Xmas%20projects/XmaselfDSCF0002.jpg

Thanks Nancj and Blinky, and yes, I'm Lauriebeast. Nancy, I've never done this for a living and have never taken an art class. That's why I keep telling people to go ahead and try some sculpting. You just might surprise yourself.
Here's a pic showing more detail. From this point on I'll be using Paperclay exclusively for the facial details. The ears will be made using DAAS air dry clay and added after the face is done. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q77/Lauriebeast/Xmas%20projects/XmaselfDSCF0008.jpg

Your progress is looking really good on the sculpt. Now, don't get too good at sculpting because I need to take you down the dark road of pneumatics at some point ;)
CandyCane
12-13-2007, 08:28 PM
Pneumatics eh? Well, I certainly know where to look for help now.
Here's another shot of my elf with his ears added. These ears still need lots of fine tuning but at least this gives y'all an idea of where I'm heading with his look. http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q77/Lauriebeast/Xmas%20projects/XmaselfDSCF0014.jpg

Thanks again everyone!
Nancj, I just made him up as I went along on the sculpt. I knew that I wanted him to be looking up because he'll be holding an ornament in each hand as if he's placing them on the tree.
Blinky, I don't even want to think about making another one at this point....just want to get him done, especially when I still have to do the hands, body and clothes. I'll sculpt the hands and make his outfit.

As usual, he's great, CC. Love the facial expression. What do you use to paint him and what do you use for hair and how do you apply it? Sorry so many questions, just thinking of project starting after Christmas, decided, why not ask the master!! I can't wait to see this guy done, hanging the ornaments.
CandyCane
12-17-2007, 06:45 AM
Thanks bethene, I just use acrylic craft paints and as for the hair, I was planning on using a wig. However, after placing a hat on his head, the hair wouldn't even be seen. So, I may not give him any hair, or eyebrows for that matter because they'll just be covered up anyway. I'll be making the body and hopefully his outfit today. Oh, and then there's still his hands....oy!

Yeah, bushes are much more fun...
The elf is so totally awesome, in absolutely every aspect. But I have 4 questions...
1) I would love to have more detail on how you made his little gloved hands. Mine never come out right. How did you do the wire and fiberfill?
2) Are those doll eyes?
3) What type of clay did you use for the face?
4) What type do you usually use for the hands?
Thanks
