P, that is how our artificial tree is put together. a dot of color at the base of each branch.
colored tape works, but comes undone after time. How about nail polish?

But I'd look really out of place choosing nail polish colors. Probably scare a few people too. LOL I wonder if you could use nail polish to paint Scandinavian designs on ornaments? Wonder how they would work in Tole painting techniques? I'd have to learn to Tole paint before I could try it.
Really all I'll need is one with color. The rest of the branches will have a duct tape tag with a number on it. The tree will be made to set up against a wall so the very back bottom set of branches wont have ornaments. The very bottom undecorated one will be color tagged. The rest will be numbered and go on in a clock wise pattern. I've been giving the tags with numbers on them some thought as well. Need a way to keep the numbers from fading away. Might spray em with lacquer.
I can kick myself in the back side for not taking pictures of a light dusting of snow on the pine trees in the back yard. Hoping to get a bit more snow this year so I can take shots of what it really looks like. I don't need ultra realism. But I don't want the indoor snow tree to look funky either.

I've tried several different placements of the fake snow. Even down the ridge of the branch. All attempts to try to make this stuff look more like real snow. It's to clumpy. The only time i've gotten fine shreds is when I used a hand saw to cut the foam for the topiary. They're more like what I need. However I don't think spending a week rocking a hand saw back and forth is worth it. I'm going to try to rig something up on a Dremel. See if it'll give me the fine shreds needed. I tried scraping some styrofoam off of one of those cones. The shavings are clear and looks like salt.

How about putting the styrofoam in a blender?

LOL you and I think WAY to much alike. I thought about that but didn't do it. I figured the styrofoam would be to light. I still might give it a shot. Might make the piece long enough to hold on to as it goes into the blades. That auta make a real big mess. LOL I've got something in the works right now that doesn't use the foam. I'm letting it sit a bit and will give it another look later. now to find my blender and a long piece of styrofoam......

Putrid,
You could always put some water in with the styrofoam (or even ice) and blend it all up. Just pour out the water through a strainer and put a paper towel or 2 in the strainer when you pour the "mixture" into it. Pull out the paper towels then just let it dry. (with the styrofoam still on the paper towels)
May be safer and easier to clean up than shoving long pieces of styrofoam into a blender......
