Thanks... I just happen to have a large porch with an over hang... I just enclosed it with foam board using 1"x2" wood strips for the frame...
put plexi glass on the backside and used great stuff for the square in look on the window... great stuff actually did better than I thought it would on the plexi then painted it white and also used the paint to give it a snow and fog look

I am actually making some lolly pops now, using PVC and blue foam. I love the gingerbread house idea. Another project to add to the list.

use two different methods.. utility knife or jigsaw... same amount of time with either way... then we used a rough file and some sand paper to round them

these picks will show you what I had to work with... I didn't do any of the gingerbread house onto the house directly... just covered my front porch

I Love the look too.. I think I will make one out of a stove box or a Frig box I live in a apartment and the maintance men throw away these boxes.. and when done with it I can pack all my xmas display away in it.. like the sidewalk candycanes, and lollypops and stuff..
I think you get the idea. But I may have to do that next year

here are a few ideas with foam board
How did you make the M&M's.. What stuff did you use . Its so cute..
And I like the yard pops too..I think your yard is going to be so cute with the nutcracker and all the candy canes and stuff.. Just loving it..
Sickie Ickie
12-04-2007, 08:48 AM
The M&M's are made from foam board, but I'm still confused how the lettering looks so identical and perfect!
IGotUbaby
12-04-2007, 08:50 PM
The letter m is not exact match... I used Microsoft word... Font is Rockwell and font size is 500 or 450 can't remember.. if you high light the font size and type in the font size it will accept it...
IGotUbaby
12-04-2007, 09:00 PM
also I cut the m out of a paper plate, the thicker kind, and used spray paint and gave it a light spray about 10 to 12 inches away... didn't want to take the chance of running... Now the only thing with the letter size might be different with every person... depends what you used to trace around to get the circle... I used a small bucket for the M&M... the Mints were done with a 5 gallon bucket and the lolly pops were done with a hubcap with a radius of about 19.5"...
The candy canes were done with cutting a 2" pvc pipe in half with an band saw the using a ribbon for the strips and a hot glue stick to put them up...
On the mints and the M&M I used the hot glue stick to put them onto the gingerbread house but sometimes they have been coming off... I guess the cold..

Do you still have the protective plastic film over the foam on the house, or did you strip it?
IGotUbaby
12-05-2007, 05:24 PM
I striped it all off... paint will stick to it but you run the risk of plastic coming off and oops there goes the paint job... I had a couple of pieces on my column I forgot to peel off... and sure enough when the plastic started to come off the paint went with it...
Sickie Ickie
12-05-2007, 06:15 PM
That's exactly the reason I asked. I strip mine off too for the same reason. I was wondering if you left it on because you said the glue came off. I must admit, I haven't had that prob wit the brand of glue I'm selling. (?)
Did you let the gun get "hot" before glueing, or did you glue as soon as you were able to push the glue through? I've found that if you glue as soon as you can push it through, the bond isn't as good as when the glue is heated more and more runny instead of gel-like.

Nice, My house is an old 1880's victorian that already looks like a gingerbread house. I'm going to try to dress it up in candy this year as well. I am a designer so here is an elevation that I am working on http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/1061/paulshousemj4.gif

That is the same way I made my lollipops, and they have lasted for about 6-7 years so far. And so easy. thinking of making new ones this year as mine are starting to fade and the plastic shrink wrap is yellowing. I love the house. Looks great. You really put a lot of work into it, and it shows.

REally cute house skully, I think it will look adorable with candy on it and around it.

Just thinking out loud here...Instead of using foam board to make the lolly pops why couldnt I use old tires? They could be painted and wrapped with pleanty of room on the inside to light them up. A PVC stem could be used for the wire chase...I am way off here or should I try to do something?
PS..where is the spell checker? I suck at it
SkullyClause
11-11-2008, 01:08 PM
if I saw old tires in half I could paint them and they would be perfect "Lifesavers" on my gingerbread house...No? Yes?
Not only that they could be stacked for easy storage if the are cut in half.

You could cut the letters for "lifesaver" out of cardboard and glue them on the tires before you paint them.

LOL...good. No I'm not really serious but I do love to recycle old stuff into new things. Ive been exploring the use of pallets and tires as a building material for years now.

Mies van der Rohe was right.
Excuse my ignorance...but WHO?
Sickie Ickie
12-14-2008, 08:30 AM
Mies van der Rohe. Father of modern architecture. Believed "minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of free-flowing open space."
In other words, just enough decoration in a large area to make it look pretty and impressive.

It looks great how did you seal the foam after you painted it if I may ask.

I took a run at making lolly pops this year and I am so going to "borrow" the M&M idea. I made my lollys out of pvc and left of foam padding from my halloween props. I like the styro foam insulation idea.

I've been here only a few hours and already found an answer to something. Love the foam candies! I'm doing research for candy props to make a section of my house look like a Gingerbread House.
I am wondering what the policy here is about bringing up old threads? Encouraged or discouraged?
Mr. Griswold
11-04-2011, 06:20 AM
Encouraged of course. If we revive a thread and it is helpful to others I bet it is fine :) I need to also brainstorm some new candy ideas for this year so its nice to revisit this thread.

We're here to share ideas and have fun as well as learn more about each other. If anything in our site helps you, or encourages you to ask a question, then exploring creativity from an old thread or new thread is welcomed. :)

Hilda, if you look at the pictures in my profile (http://christmasfanclub.com/album.php?albumid=99), you can see a similiar setup using foam, plus a few closeups of the process. Enjoy!
I've since moved to a new house and gave my gingerbread panels to someone in the neighborhood so they can be used. My new house has a different shaped garage face and will require new panels.

Warrant,
Thank you so much!! Your album has given me MUCH inspiration for decorating the side of my house. I am LOVING the foam circle swirls and the orange slices. You don't have the same weather we do here in the Northeast... I was wondering how you gave the 'sugared' effect to the orange slices and if they weathered well. I need to find something to 'sugar' some of my props that will withstand the winter.
Thank you again! Good luck in your new home!! This thread may have been an oldie... but DEFINITELY a goodie!! (get it? candies? goodies?)

Dude TOTALLY cool. Way to share the joy! But I've got you figured out. You moved so you could make new props. A true decker! LOL
I like it, and been thinking on how to mount it to the side of the house and hold up to snow..

Sugar? I know you can get glitter in different size, from powder, all the way to jumbo. Maybe clear?

What do you use to make the glitter adhere to the prop that will withstand the weather? (Be gentle... I am clueless sometimes and completely new to making outdoor props... but I am a quick study!)

I would try the 3M 777 adhesive spray. That stuff works wonders! I would think it would withstand at least some rain and snow.

I saw recently in the dollar store where they made sugar on larger items by using small clear beads glued to the surface.
Hilda
11-08-2011, 08:31 AM
Thanks guys. I want to make a sugared surface on a blowmold that would be illuminated. We tried some fine clear beads with a tacky glue on it last year at Christmas and it sort of... well... it all slid off. LOL
Back to the drawing board!! I don't know what type of adhesive would withstand the weather and not look horrible illuminated.
Try and try again! Right?!

There's always latex that could be painted on and "sugar" added while wettish.. :)
