So, I would love to thank Putrid for my latest obsession :) It all started when I saw his aluminum tree! I just had to have one. So I looked on ebay and quickly realized I could not afford one from online. but I did look on kijiji, and as luck would have it, an ad was listed that day! I purchased 2 trees for $30. One 3 foot blue and a 4 foot teal tree. This got me started on vintage and antique Christmas. I also purachased a Noma Santa (catalog #33) In great condition still with the original box and instructions!!! Since then, I have been searching for older christmas stuff. Here is what I have found thus far:

Dude! TOTALLY dig your Noma lighted Santa! GREAT find! Original box and in good shape. AND the tree ROCKS! I know you didn't mention it but it's just as cool. Like the silver candle wreath! Really cool start to what I hope will be a satisfying and lasting experience. Looking forward to seeing some truly great finds from ya! Oh and by the way, your welcome. LOL

hahah thats actually 2 different trees :) im addicted. And I now have 3 of the wreaths, all still working. I just picked up a big lot of about 60 vintage glass ornaments. Mostly indented shiny brites but there are some a few war balls and others aswell. All glass. I am going to look at some red bottle brush wreaths tommorrow, but im low on funds because I need to buy gifts so the may need to wait . And once again, thanks.:):):) My parents are glad that for once, its not always blow molds im taking home.
I want to buy a feather tree, but making my own is more my buget for the time being.

You can always cheat and make your feather tree out of plastic evergreen garland like I did. I used that stuff they sell at Walmarts. it's a single strand of dull evergreen. Here's what I did..
Fist figure out how big the tree will be. Cheat with a ruler. Count each 1/4 as an inch. So each inch will now be equal to 4 inches. Now draw out the hight of your tree using the 1/4 to an inch measurement scale. Make a triangle to represent the length of the branches and decide how many rows you want. Keep in mind that the upper branches should be closer together than the lower. Draw in your triangle where you want your branches to be. WALA you now have two important measurements. Where to put the holes in the dowel rod and the length of all your branches. Also make sure to include the brach that goes straight up from the center pole in your design.
Something to consider when choosing the distance between your rows of branches. What size ornaments you plan on using and how well with things hang in between them.
The dowel rod. I used either a 3/4 or 7/8, don't remember. Anyway how to get the branches evenly spaced. Take a strip of paper. Place one end on the rod and wrap the rest around till they overlap. Draw a line in the exact spot the paper meets itself. Now you have a flat measurement of the diameter of your dowel rod. Make s strip for every row of branches you need.
Decide how many branches you want per level. Less branches = more authentic. More branches = fuller ( like mine ) To find out were to drill the center pole use the strips of paper. Say you want 5 branches for a row. On the starting edge of the paper make a dot. Thats' branch one. Divide the measurement of the strip into five. Make a 4 more dots evenly on the strip. When you LIGHTLY glue the strip to the center pole make sure you can see the dots. Drill. I also drilled a center hole in the top of the dowel rod for the top branch. Remember to drill the branch hole in at an angle sloping down from the top of the tree. Bend each branch to so they go down into the hole and stick straight out. The angle doesn't have to be that steep. around 20' or so. The branches will rock back and forth but wont fall out.
The limbs. Cut your wire to the length of the branch PLUS what will go inside the dowel rod. Tightly Wrap the wire with the garland. It will be to thick. Take a pair of scissors and trim them down to thickness of needles you want. It will be messy. Do this for all your branches.
I glued two scrap pieces of 2x4 together and drilled a hole in the center the diameter of the dowel rod for my stand. Hid it inside a cardboard house.
It's a bit of work but really easy. The hardest part is the drilling. But after a few holes even that gets easier.
When your done you have a fake feather tree the size you want. Without spending a few hundred for a real one!

I think the price is a bit inflated due to Christmas. I sold a Noma Snowman flatback a while back for $75. I like that it went to someone I respect and I know will be able to use it.

I would tend to agree with you that it is inflated due to the time of year. I just thought that it was interesting that it was selling for such a high price at all.

Yepper. Interesting about what is considered classic. Something will go for almost nothing and are almost a hundred or more years old, and others will skyrocket through the roof.

I sell books for a part time job. I have a saying for myself. An item may be "worth" a certain amount of money, but you are only going to "get" what someone is willing to pay for it.
In the right spot, a collector will pay a lot more for an item than the general public will. Why? A lot more interest from a particular party.
But I agree, you have to be a heck of a collector for $365. ($1 for each day of the year.)

You'd have to ask the experts on here that.
I did find a flat back Santa face. Wasn't someone looking for that? http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Noma-Lighted-Santa-Face-Blow-Mold-/300500989915?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45f74137db

I wouldnt call myself a expert but from what I have seen it is considered fairly rare and especially in such good condition.

No it's not rare at all. Hard to find in good condition but not rare. That's simply greed. People with more money then common sense. Nothing more than touched up photos to make it look really good. You get that out of the box and it will look as flat and lifeless as the ones that sell for a LOT less.

It's why I love & hate Ebay all at the same time.
Hubby was looking for a kerosene heater for his pop recently & there were 5 that were all by the same seller, all ending at really close together end times like 3:44, then the next was ending at 3:45, the next 3:46, etc. so there was no way you could bid on the next one if you lost the first one or second one, etc.
On the bright side, he ran one up to $185 & got his for $99.:happyfatsanta:
Don't even get me started on "reserve" prices.

are vintage aluminum trees really expensive? My mom got a big silver colored one that had the original cardboard tubing and a separate vintage color wheel flood thingy to place in front of it for maybe $10 at a yardsale. She is still pulling her stuff out from the attic but I cant wait to see it all setup.
We are into the vintage look too, awesome finds there chris :3

YES. Very expensive depending on condition, style and how tall they can actually run from $20 into the several hundred dollar range!

As long as your happy with it it's all good! I did go to Ebay. Not always reliable but a great place to see what things are worth if you can find them. It's one thing to say this is worth this or that. It's better to know what people are actually paying for them. Your $4.99 is close to what they're going for on Ebay. So you did good! Didn't have to pay for shipping and you have something you'll enjoy for years.
Here's a link (http://toys.shop.ebay.com/Vintage-Antique-Toys-/717/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A10%257C66%253A4%257C39%253 A1&rt=nc&_nkw=tin+train+wind&_catref=1&_sticky=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_sop=1&_sc=1) to what I found. I go form there to advanced search. Then click on completed items to see what sold for what.

I think the cards are probably later than 1840's just by the style..1880's-1910's I am betting the backside advertised a local store or some product (if you could see the back? ). Trade Cards that someone then made into Christmas ornaments back then. Scrap ornanaments were not always done with commercially printed die cut scraps. People used what they could get.

Im just going by what I could find and researching the poem that was on them. On the back of the small one there is a little girl and another saying and on the bigger one its more florals and the rest of the poem (which was written in 1838). they are not dated but the only ones I could find online with the red silk fringe were from the earlier time period. I will for sure have to look into things further.

Cool finds CB_Christmas! Totally dig the Italian Nativity. Always get a kick out of the pieces. On my big set they all look like they've been standing in line for 30 minutes at Wal marts. LOL They got some strange facial expressions. Yours looks to me like the bodies are saying 'we're all happy to be here' They faces say, 'we've been here to long'. LOL Except the far right Wise man in the close up pic. Is he sticking his tongue out?

And as Putrid asked, what size are the pieces?
CB_Christmas
01-27-2011, 01:26 AM
they are not very big. The tallest one is around 3 or 3 1/2 inches high.... And they are displayed on my couch in the picture because im still putting away all the Christmas boxes, so thats the only area not cluttered with boxes in my art room.
Just before Christmas we had a basement flood of about a foot or so of water. So we are slowly getting everything taken out and replaced. So there are still a few boxes that havent made it to storage yet. Im just glad that it didnt flood WITH all of our christmas stuff down there. By the end of this weekend, all the goxes should be gone though.
The Italian nativity is really cool. I saw a chalkware nativity at the same place just after Christmas but I didnt have any money with me, but when I went back it was gone :( they only wanted $3 too :( Oh well, you win some and lose some I guess.......

Where are you planning on displaying the small candle blow molds? Are they going to be used inside?

thanks! They will be going inside. Most likely one on either side of one of the aluminum trees. They would get covered with snow too fast outside... As for the toys and the glass, they will go on my bookshelf. but all the old toys will be going under the tree with the shiny brites on it come Christmas time.

I have been looking for the pumpkin for years now so im happy to finally have one. And the price was right ;) the pumpkin has a hole molded into it do you can hang it on the wall.
When I was very little, I always had that type santa in my room next to my tree.

LOL I have a box full of the old cardboard houses from when I was a kid. I don't dare put them out now or my kids would destroy them.

yes he does have green eyes. and I cant really read the markings on the bottom, it appears that it has worn off (the bottom appears to be sanded down, probably from being attached to something concrete or a roof) but he is dapol.
http://blowmoldsrus.webs.com/dapolindustries.htm
not sure if he will end up outside or perhaps by one of my trees inside. Its a bit strange but this is the only blowmold I have seen without a light hole in the back. Just a very small hold for the cord to pass through. Is that normal for dapol molds?

Not sure. I have several older blow molds who's light assembly are attached to a base from the bottom. The light itself is on a stiff wire that goes up inside the blow molds body. Perhaps this one is like that. Someone has one on Ebay but they don't show the light or bottom of the blow mold.
green eye santa on ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dapol-Santa-RARE-BlowMold-Light-Plastic-Outdoor-Xmas-Yard-Art-Decor-Vtg-Figure-/190595612684?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c6062400c#ht_1457wt_915)

60$? I paid 10$ for him because I thought he was awesome. However; that one is in better shape. I would take a picture of the Bottom and light assembly, but Im living 500km away at university.

Dapols that are older do indeed have a light kit that ran up a metal rod from the base of the mold as what Putrid said. That is a really neat one. Thanks for sharing CB

I was looking at the pics on the ebay link. Looks like there is a hole near the foot for a light, or a cord. But what is the "screw" in Santa's back just below the belt? Is that to hold the light?
Just curious.
Mr. Griswold

I looked at that as well Edwin. I could be a light kit screw but thats a weird spot for it. Mabye the previous owner added that screw to use as a wire tie down I am not sure at all. I guess if CB's has the same screw or a screw hole there then it would be a light kit screw.

Mine has the same screw holding a light bulb socket. Thats why I was confused that there was no light hole.

I think I have the answer :) Interesting enough when I picked up my LA Goodman flatback this weekend my friend found a simularDapol Santa at the same sale. I looked closely and this is a 2 piece Santa blow mold. You remove the screw from the back and the top half of Santa comes off. The bulb rests inside of Santa. I have only seen sleighs and mechanical blow molds be made in 2 pieces so this was unusual. Anyways if you need a light in Santa CB remove the screw and Santa comes apart I bet. Hold him high in the air and you should see the gap between his pants and his jacket. If you do theres your answer :) I hope that info helps.

First of all. I LOVE every single thing in this thread. Spectacular finds! WOW! What a collection of Christmas magic!
I have that green-eyed Santa. Mine is one piece. The screw is a mystery to me as well. The one I have, the paint would just rub off right in your hand. Usually, on the older pieces, I will keep paint original even if it is worn because that gives it a lovely warm character. However, this piece my friend did restore for me and it is breathtaking.
Congratulations on all your lovely treasures!!
