I don't know how everyone feels about this type of thread, but I was thinking (I know scary right). Most of the threads on the forum have a certain topic, like someone talking about their xmas decorations. Does anyone else ever feel like saying some random things about how they are feeling about christmas, but don't really fit into any thread?

My idea for this thread would pretty much be free for all. Come in and post any christmas thoughts you had for the day. Sometimes I feel like saying random things about christmas, but I don't want to derail someone elses thread.

For example, you could simply come in and be like "Only 42 days until Christmas, I'm so excited!" or "I just picked out a christmas tree today". Basically, stuff that you want to say, but isn't a big enough topic to really start a new topic about.

I don't know how everyone else feels about these random types of threads, but I'll start with a few things that I wanted to mention/ask to get it started.

I'm in a really good mood this weekend. I just got done filling out an app for a new apartment and assuming I get approved, which I probably will, I will move in on December 15, 4 days before I fly home for christmas.

Secondly, I was just listening to the holiday classic christmas songs on youtube and they generally have some sort of christmas artwork to go with them. I just realized how excited those snowy scenes make me. I felt like a little kid again on the few days leading up to christmas.

Also, you know the christmas season is coming/here. Rockefeller's christmas tree was just cut down the other day. There is a video of them cutting it down and loading it onto a truck on cnn's website if anyone cares to watch.

Anyway, that's the idea I had for the thread. I just like hearing how other people are feeling and things you see in person or in the news to make it feel even more christmasy.

And can you believe...2 weeks and 3 days and it is December. Woo! :)

Nice idea halfawake454. But we kinda have something like this going in the off topic section of the forum. Called the 'weekly'. Not as random as this. More like a continues conversation.

Guess my random thoughts would be....

really do need to repaint blow molds in the summer where I can do them outside at night. House is full of fumes.....

Yepper. Our weekly (which lasts for the entire month) is a collection of these kinds of thoughts. http://www.christmasfanclub.com/showthread.php?p=49777#post49777

You are more than welcome to add to it.

I like this thread, while the "Weekly" is supposed to be the same thing, this will hopefully be more "Christmas" related than how bad work is.... How I didn't sleep well last night... etc etc...

My mind is racing with Christmas ideas both at home and at work! Employees are saving boxes for the "Big Wrap!" :D (about 400+ large empty boxes that we use at work for a display). Glad the employees are getting the "Spirit"!

That's funny because even I, the thread starter would agree that they kind of overlap. I actually did search the forum, but was unable to find anything of this sort. I had a feeling someone was gonna point me to a thread that I didn't find that was similar.

It's up to whatever you guys want to do. Keep this one for more christmas related stuff or just close it and use the weekly thread that was mentioned.

After I made this thread today I came across some more christmas stuff. I currently live in an apartment and when I was walking through the complex i noticed 2 people with decorations. One had a christmas tree up inside I could see, the other had some plants on their balcony that they had decorated with lights. All of these small things just making it exciting. Also, recently I ran across this store that sells yard decorations and I didn't go into the store, but it looked like they had a lot of christmas stuff. Probably the closet thing to a Christmas themed store (like an xmas equivalent to spirit halloween) that I've seen.

Went to Low's yesterday and seen lots of different puffies ( airblowns ). Still don't like em. The only time I get a kick out of em is when they're laying on the ground like clumps of dirty clothes.

I think sometimes I let greed overpower common sense when it comes to collecting Christmas stuff. I have way to many things to get done to spend half the day at an auction hoping to get more. Think I'll stay home today and get it done. I have enough stress to deal with without making more.

A random thought thread is easy. Just don't comment on someone else's thought and it stays true to its intentions. Or at least keep the comments to a minimum.

Still fighting the urge to go look for Christmas stuff....need to get 11 tree stands done...won't have time to do em this week after work....but I will check Craigslist for blow molds LOL

my mom is coming over here in a little bit to work on making Christmas ornaments, which ought to be interesting as I have lost the use of my left arm for a few days. (Not a big deal - something that happens with various limbs all the time). But we have chosen this project to start working on together because we dont see each other often. We have never done this before - so this ought to get REAL interesting ;)

My husband asked me a question today I thought I would never hear come out of his mouth. "How soon do you think you can get your Christmas stuff down from the attic"? Of course it had nothing to do with him wanting me to decorate and more to do with the fact that my stuff is in his way of installing some wiring for a project to install more outlets outside for my displays. But still, it made me happy to hear that I have the official go ahead to pull it all out. I am so excited.

Nice thread Halfawake.

yeah, I like this thread too!
talked to my friend in California who has a almost 6 year old little girl and got some ideas for gifts for her, I am getting excited!
my daughter has always gotten a real tree, would go with us when we went to the tree farm, asked her if she is getting one this year, but no way to go get one, no car, etc. . I might try to ship her a small artificial one, not a nice as a real, but she should have a tree of some sort!

I went to Salvation Army Saturday to dump some stuff off, and, of course, I had to go in. I ended up getting the cutest wooden fire truck. Its really heavy and made for a small child to ride on. Paint is good (bright red and yellow). I guess I'll have to use it in some kind of display, even though I was thinking that I wasn't going to do anything outside except some lights on the bushes. Last year I had a display, but I didn't even take any pictures of it. What was I thinking? Well, I'll come up with some sort of outdoor scene to use it in.

As we were going through a bunch of stuff yesterday (nice way of saying we were DIGGING OUT items for the display):) We came across two 6" black and white portable TV sets. (at this point I started berating Chris for being so BRILLIANT with his display houses) I got the idea of setting up something SORTA like Chris's displays WITH a TV in the living room and a stuffed toy(s) or Santa sitting there watching a Christmas movie of some sort. The movie could be fed to the TV sets via cable from one of the (many) dvd or vhs players in the house. Thanks Chris (I THINK!):) For the inspiration!:):):)

P.S. This will be a project for NEXT year!:)

I am trying my best to get an answer from the manufacturer of the onboard charger for my train. For some reason (and I am sure it is a good one, but I have no clue why) there are 3 wires coming from the charger. One wire is -24 volt dc and the other two are +24 volt dc.

I am NOT a mechanic (of ANY sort):) but it seems to me it should just be one of each. Can anyone shed light on what I need to be doing here? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, this is the only stumbling block to getting this baby running down the track.

Thanks in advance!:)

Glad people are liking the thread and it is taking off. I just can't get over how close it starting to feel. I feel so ancy that I almost just want to run to the airport and fly home for christmas now, lol. What really is making it seem close is school. In some of my classes we have already talked about the schedule for the next couple of weeks (rest of the semester) and once the semester ends: Christmas!

I was walking to walmart yesterday and I noticed an apartment with some good light displays up. It was a huge amount, but for an apartment it was pretty cool and to see it already is cool.

Oh my, I just remembered, in about a week/a little over christmas music is probably going to start playing on the radio. Can't believe Thanksgiving is next week.

There are a row of duplexes at the end of my street - every other year only one had any sort of C-mas lights up (complete with a line of lights down the roof to divide their half!) - this year there are already 8 families (4 houses) all decked out. The holiday spirit is slowly awakening!! :)

I'm going to start making a couple plywood "gift" boxes to put out in the yard this year. My daughter & her bff already volunteered to paint them. I do believe I saw large wooden bows at Michael's......perfect!! I just hope they don't get buried in snow & just look like lumps.

Just the impression I got based on the originator and Putrid's comment. It is just random comments, not random conversations. That is why we have the weekly. But I could be wrong. I don't think there is anything wrong with commenting on someone else's comment, I just thought it was not the place for a possibly long discussion on electronics, etc.

halfawake454
11-17-2010, 11:43 AM
I think it is fine if people comment and converse about what others have posted, but at the same time someone can come in a say something completely different from that discussion. I just envisioned it as a free-for-all. Talk about any christmas stuff you want to and reply to whoever you want(or noone if you'd rather).

At the same time though, if it gets to conversation oriented then it might to start interfere with the weekly thread. I guess it could be seen as the christmas version of the weekly thread?

Man, I have NOT been struck with the Christmas spirit yet! It's so slow to hit me this year. I can't believe Thanksgiving is done already. I think I'm still stuffed, so it did happen!

I'm actually dreading dragging out all the totes out of the garage this weekend & rearranging the living room to make room for the tree, etc.

On the plus side....I may be more likely to set a bunch of stuff aside to donate...and I kind of enjoyed seeing the lights out already on my way home from my sister's last night.

I took yesterday to watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles in honor of Thanksgiving.

Then I watched Christmas Vacation to officially kick off the Christmas season!

I've done a decent enough job of not really jumping the gun on doing too much Christmas stuff thus far (I'll get burned out early if I do), but now that Thanksgiving is over it's officially time to kick off the festivities.

Today I tried to watch "Chistmas is Here Again". The parts I didn't sleep through I had to turn the volume way down or fast forward through. Had to be one of the worst animated movies I have ever seen. The storyline was cute, and there were lots of good actors doing the voices. But they totally ruined the movie with the really lousy music and HORRID singing. There was way too much of it and it was done terribly. So I watched Harold and Maude and it took the bad taste out of my mouth. LOL That was a strange movie. I am looking forward to, hopefully, watching Scott's version of A Christmas Carol tomorrow.

I also watched "Christmas is Here Again." And I agree, it wasn't great. The singing was obviously done by the actors themselves, who are untrained, and like you say, there are too many musical numbers. It took me about three days to get through it, watching it a little here and a little there.

I did think the animation was interesting, though. It seems reminiscent of that recent animated film "The Secret of Kells," which I believe was nominated for an academy award.

The main issue I have with this time of year is that my hands get too cold to use tools outside! So I probably to move to a warmer climate since I don't see Christmas getting moved to any other time of the year......

Just look at that countdown at the top of the page. It's almost 25 days until Christmas!!!

I've been doing some shopping for myself. I bought a new sony bravia 40 inch hdtv last night and just a few hours ago I got a stand for it and a new computer desk. I'm trying not to unbox the tv or the tv stand until i move into my new apartment on the 15th of Dec, which is why I'm buying all this. The computer desk is just a cheap mainstays one I found at walmart, hopefully it is sturdy enough for my liking. I'll hate to disassemble the desk and box it back up and lug that heavy thing back to the store.

Anyway, really want to set the tv up, but since it is a xmas gift, I want to try and wait to set it up, let the anticipation build. Plus, again, in 14 days I'd have to box it back up again anyway.

Hey Dave and blue!:)

Thanks! Win or not, we are proud of the display this year. I think my favorite part is one you have to LOOK for to see. That would be the candy canes (in the "X" holders) with the little trees below them. They run along the fence on the EAST side of the property. (I know I said west side at some point prior to this, NOW you know why Mark does the navigating on trips:))

Anyhow, I am pleased. NOW I get to start building the promised crates for storing the Christmas trees in the house. I opened my big mouth, and promised, so Mark recycled those old, beat-up cardboard boxes. NOW I need to build wooden boxes with casters and storage for lights/decorations. Looking forward to it!:):):)

I went to the Salvation Army store again and scored a few things. Didn't have to stalk anyone today! I got an animated wire frame snowman that tips his hat; a whimsical tree thats wire and fabric and reminds me of those paper lanterns that fold up. Its 4 feet tall and says its indoor/outdoor; a large dense foam lighted candy cane. Its about 3feet tall and has red and white lights on it. The red lights even have red wire. I also got an animated motionette Santa, giant bulb path lights set, and a crafted shutters decoration that has snowmen painted on it. So I should be able to fill up some space in front with that.

The girl & I got the tree decorated last night, under close feline & canine stupervision! This was the first time I've noticed the dog trying to get under the tree. He was just trying to sniff the garland on the floor in back, so I just watched to make sure he didn't cause any havoc & once he sniffed to his little hearts content, he left it alone. Whew! Darn those crazy Beagle noses!

Also got the new snowman blowmold & spiral trees put out in the yard. I also scored a pink flying pig from Lowe's that's just too freakin' cute! I can honestly say that if I don't get the plywood "gifts" done to put out there, I won't be too upset. I'm pretty happy with the little bit I have out there.

Now I have to concentrate on clean up efforts after the Christmas tornado that struck the inside......

I do like the cold with snow, but not super cold, just barely cold enough for snow.

You mentioning that reminded me of a snow when I was younger. It was Christmas Eve night and it started snowing, first time in a long time. I just remember me and my siblings ran out into the snow and I still remember how warm it felt. I went out in short sleeves and it still felt fairly warm, like too warm for snow. It was cool having snow on Christmas eve night like that, it was a cool and welcomed surprise. To this day remembering how warm it was is still the main memory from that day.

Kinda sad actually. Almost finished with something I've been waiting for a year to do. Have a few more things to get done and it's, well, done. Then i'll have to wait till next year to do it again. I think that's why it's taken me so long to do this. I enjoy every minute of it. Probably why I still have things to do. Just spreading the joy out a bit. LOL

Hey Putrid!:)

I can understand where you are coming from:) Just look at the beauty you have created for others to enjoy, think of all the smiles you (yeah YOU) have created with that display. How many people don't have your touch with creative displays that look forward to seeing your yard display every year? You did a WONDERFUL thing here. Those same people will be looking forward to seeing what you do NEXT year too! (NOW is the time to start thinking about THAT) start visualizing what you might do differently for next year.

Keep the faith my friend! You did a GOOD thing!:):):)

Alrighty, my house is still trashed from unpacking decorations. I hate that work keeps getting in my way! I know, I know, I really am grateful to even have a job, no matter how boring it is! But by the time I get home I don't feel like doing anything. I was mortified when my Mom stopped in over the weekend & I was napping!

We finally drew names for the family gift exchange. Of course I got my 24 year old nephew who is probably the hardest person in the world to buy for. He seriously needs to give me some ideas! There are only so many beer steins / shot glasses a guy who still lives at home needs!

In happier news, I got an email that the platoon I adopted is ending their deployment in Afghanistan and should be home around Christmas! Woohoo for the 2123rd Transportation Co !!

I don't think it is suppose to be this cold in FL. My mother called and said it was snowing a little bit in the north part of Pensacola today. Hasn't been any snow here in about 15 yrs. Of course, my house is right off the Gulf so there won't ever be any snow at my house no matter how cold it gets. Gonna be in the 20s again in a few days. It's just not right.

I think most of my outdoor display is done. Time to finish the inside. And then on to shopping. UGH!!! Well, at least making the cards was fun. And we are suppose to be getting our tree this week.

My roommate also works at GoDaddy and has invited me to the christmas party today, so we'll see how that goes. Just had one last night with some other friends. Christmas parties all over!

4 days until i move into new apt.
8 days until i fly home for xmas break
14 days until christmas

two are down to single digits :)

EDIT:

I was just thinking. I haven't watched anything christmas shows since November when I watched Disney's A Christmas Carol. I think i'm gonna watch Christmas Vacation tomorrow...or maybe i'll make it cartoon specials tomorrow. Yeah...maybe i'll watch some cartoons, the holiday episodes, tomorrow....so many decisions!

It just makes me dizzy and makes my head hurt with all the noise and activity and music and all of it. And it is too late to internet shop. Oh well. Maybe my daughter-in-law will go with me. It could be a fun day with her and the baby, in and out of the car seat all day long. What am I thinking? I will do it on a day when my son is home and can keep the little one.

SNOW DAY! And after hearing how may accidents were out there on the roads, hubby & I both opted to call in to work today. "No, I'm not sick, I just don't want to risk wrecking my car!" At least he can work from home.

On the plus side - it looks SO pretty outside! My poor little flying pig looks like its struggling to flap its wings.

Maybe I can get myself motivated to take one last look thru the ornament boxes before I sent them back to the garage. And I need to go one a quest - I know I bought a glass block "gift" for under the tree a year or two ago and it just occured to me that I have no idea where it is!!!

How come my butter cookies come out looking like round blobs when I press them out of the cookie press to look like Christmas Trees? Oven is at 400 degrees, maybe too hot? This was my first time for butter cookies and cooke press.

ps do not buy the Food Network Cookie press from Kohl's unless you absolutely have to. It comes with no instructions and does not come apart for cleaning that I can tell. But I can't find one anywhere else, so now I am stuck. Seems the dishwasher got it clean as you can get the 'pusher' about two inches out of the tube at the bottom. I guess a bottle brush would work....what a pain.

The tree is still sitting in a bucket of water in the garage. Maybe we'll get it up today. On Monday I baked nut cups, date filled snowballs and a new recipe I found in a mag for chocolate hazelnut caramel thumbprint cookies. I didn't like them at first, so I didn't bring them to my gathering. They tasted good yesterday, though. I don't know. Maybe I was doing too much sampling of the ingredients (i.e. chocolate and caramel!) on the day I baked them.

Went to put the tree up yesterday and it was frozen in the bucket of water. All the needles were falling off. It must have been a bad, dry tree when we got it. It was soooo cold the night we picked it up that all we were looking for was the shape. Forgot to check if it was real fresh. We ended up getting another tree and I just finished putting the lights on it.
