New for ’10. I found a Styrofoam surfboard curbside and thought I would make a Surfing Santa! The figure was originally made from ½” ply but was found to be too heavy and tipped easy. So I then made it from 1/8” Masonite. I attached boards to the back to add strength and help reduce warping. The figure is attached to the board with threaded rod (picture of which is work in progress). The board is moved with a wiper motor.

The first picture of Santa is without shading - second is with.

This video shows the mechanics. There is a ¾’ PVC pipe which attached to the board and rides over a ½” pipe which acts as the bearing. You can see in the video that it flexes – a bit too much so the inside pipe will be replace with rigid conduit

That's a really nice looking prop, Dano!
The motion of it looks very realistic. That's sure to be a hit with the Florida and California deckers.
Great job!

I should have that in my yard. It is sooooo cute. I generally do not like nontraditional santa displays. But that is so amazing and unique. And the mechanics of it are very well done.
