View Full Version : Giant Candy?

Fellow Deckers, this season I'll be covering my house with facades of a gingerbread candy house which will have giant candies and frosting attached. I figure I'll use Great Stuff painted white for the frosting, but was looking for ideas for the candies. All we have in San Diego is the 4'x8' white beaded foam boards - messy but effective. I'll probably have some of the candies lit from the inside using led string lights. PVC pipe with a spiral of red paint for candy canes, etc. I'm also very effective with milk jugs, cardboard, and chicken wire.
Anyone have some details of giant candies? Thanks!

Here are some pics I got off the net. They may help in the designing.

Thanks Chris, good stuff.
No, JW, and I've looked at every store around. Seems all we get here in the bottom left corner is the white foam bead stuff. Even when I talk to the guys at the stores they give me weird looks.

For the front door of my house I am going to use 1' PVC pipes for pillars to look like candy canes. Have you looked at your local habitat for humanity for materials?

Peppermint after dinner mints! Round candy with plastic wrapped around it. I have little ones on a string that light up but giant ones would rock :)

This is something that I'd thought about but haven't tried. I know folks use milk jugs or other clear or semi clear plastic jugs to repair blow molds with. What about using them to make something meant to be lit form the inside? Make a frame ( in this case will say one for an M&M candy- a hollow circle ) out of plywood. Cover both the front and back with the plastic. Spray paint the front the color and design you need. Use the back to support the light.
An idea for getting the plastic flat. Use two cookie sheets. The top sheet would be weighted. Place in a warm oven and let the plastic slowly flatten. I haven't tried this so I'm not sure it'll work.

LOL! My wife writes a weekly humor column and for some reason the seniors are her biggest fans...my neighbor cooks for the senior center so they all know where I live... that might not be a good idea.

Alright, I was thinking on some things that were said here on this Thread, my Hubby has agreed to it.
Since our House is Adobe and Frame and already looks like a Gingerbread House, we figured we would finish off, by making Foamboard Icing, Large Candies on Stakes, Candy Canes made from the PVC Pipes ya'll were talking about, Multi - Color Strand Lights and Multi - Color Icicle Lights, a few New Inflatables, and whatever else we were going to do on the inside of the house.
I think that would certainly make things "Pop."
It will be our very first Building Projects, but I think it would fit the bill.
Plus, we already get Natural Snowfall, so we don't have to worry about Icing Icicles, as we get them Naturally.
With the Multi Color Strand Lights we already have, woven through the Trees and Bushes, etc., I think with Paper Bag Luminarias, it would set the scene.

I have a few ideas for you. These are ideas that I plan to use for my house...I have been wanting to turn it into a giant gingerbread or candyland house for a long time. For the candies you can use the round flat foam pieces that you put down in plant pots...I hope you know what I am talking about. Anyway they come in white and you can paint green or red stripes then wrap them in clear cellophane to look like large peppermint candies. Another idea is those round chinese paper lanterns come in colors. You open them up, put a glow stick in and wrap them in clear cellophane to look like large wrapped candies. You can open one end of the wrapping to put a new glow stick in. I use colored pool noodles for my large candy canes and I want to cut out gingerbread men from foam board to make them life size. Hope these are ideas you can use.

Did anyone else watch the HGTV Halloween Special?
They actually decorated one of the houses like a candy house.
The placed float festooning on the exterior of the house.
And they wrapped cheap colored rice paper balls in cellophane to look like large candies.
P.s. This idea and this thread is very inspiring!

i used white foam and cut out round lollipop shapes years ago for my candy. then wrapped them in shrink wrap with a dowel stuck in them for the stick. i had painted each one like a pinwheel design. i will see if I can find pics but they look like most others. Last year i made candy kisses and gum drops from white foam. the kisses I made to look more round by adding some fluffed aluminum foil to the inside also. gotta go find those pics.
Here is one: http://www.christmasfanclub.com/picture.php?albumid=26&pictureid=412
Putrid, sounds like it would be a lot easier to use very thin plexiglass instead of trying to melt plastic jugs.

Another question: what are some ways to attach foam board to stucco? I'm hesitant to drill screws into the house since it's not my house (military housing). The underside of the eves is the plastic siding, so no solid anchors there. The frame around the garage door is wood so I have some anchor spots there. But the side and other facing sides are stucco. I expect each foamboard facade panel to weigh up to 6-10 pounds with the extra candies and decorations on it. I do have dirt around the base of the house allowing for rebar anchors at the bottom. Ideas I'm juggling:
- Velcro. Glue some spots to the stucco, attach the facades.
- Build a wood frame to outline the facade area, and attach the foamboard to a wood frame then attach the frame to the house.
...and that's really it. Ideas?

I'm guessing add a plywood back and cable tie that to a stake or two.

Thanks Warrant. After I painted it I added "pixie dust". It's a very fine sort of opalescent glitter. I wanted it to look like sugar. It comes in a jar and I probably got it at WalMart.
you have a very tough dilemma trying to figure out how to (easily and affordably) mount that to stucco. good luck.

Cut them out of 1/8" sub floor (brain freeze - what you put down before vinal floor) painted white and sprinkled them with glitter. Hang them with fishing line. Going on 4 years now. Some have broke due to banging against a tree or each other... No, they don't light up.

Wow, you cut them out? I'm with Chris here...how did you do THAT? I am thinking of using my cricut machine to cut out varying sizes of snowflakes from cardstock to make a stencil, then spray painting them on to thin circles of plexiglass and hanging them. Mine will not be lit up either. And it probably won't be this year.

Chirs / JW Scroll saw. Used dbl sided tape and cut 3 or 4 at a time. I had (last year) blue floods in that area. All the bushes had blue / white minis.
I am so sorry for getting this thread off track.....

what about using small round food containers...the ones that would only hold about 8 or 10 grapes (dollar store to the rescue!), and paint them as you like. Stick a light or two inside each one and glue them where you want them. I'm thinking of a variation of the lighted xmas presents made from large transparent food containers.
You'd be able to use strings of lights, I would think, if you poke the lights into the containers from behind (through) the structure that the containers are glued to. that way, you can easily hide the lights on the string that aren't being used.

I found "candy balls" at Party City for .99 the other day. It's like a food container, only it's shaped like a ball. Bought 12 for $12, making that 24 halves to use. I plan on lighting them from behind.

Awesome project Slanks! How did you attach the foam?
To start with, I cut the foam to fit snuggly. Then I attached with a couple screws per sheet. Since it is flush with the timbers, that is all it needed. The candy cane trimming went on top of the cedar boards and I used a couple screws each on those as well.
