The George C. Scott version of "A Christmas Carol" which aired on CBS in 1984 and is available at amazon on DVD and VHS, I believe.

I have seen many versions of the story, most of them, including Patrick Stewart's, Alister Sims, the musical Scrooge with Albert Finney, some animated versions and Michael's Caine's version with the Muppets.

We even have a new one this year, Zemekis' animated version with Jim Carrey.

But I have never seen Victorian England look so bleak, feel so hopeless and Christmas feel so needed as I did in the George C. Scott version. Surrounded by Brits, the American actor held his own, and is thus far the only Ebenezer in my opinion to make "Humbug" sound like a filthy word flung in disgust.
He made the word feel offensive.

Marley makes me weep in this version. He isn't overdone and dramatic like most Marleys, and his complete hopelessness is credible.
Tiny Tim is believable, and the Cratchet family is heartbreaking yet inspiring.

Scotts Scrooge is cruelly dismissive until his slow and steady redemption, and seeing his Scrooge break down at the end, faced not with Hell and fire and damnation, but just a simple forgotten tombstone, really kicks me in the gut.

No one should ever hear Gen. Patton cry.

And ya gotta love the musical theme of this piece.

Portions are on youtube. Go check it out, then buy it if you like it.

Side Note: You decorate for Christmas in November?

Before Thanksgiving?

Do you put up ALL of your decorations in Mid November?

Back to the Question

I used to love It's a Wonderful Life but my husband has forced me to watch it several times a year for the last 5 years.

I am thinking about getting a leg lamp and a rifle to show my new love for A Christmas Story.

My favorite Christmas movie is "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation"!!! (my second favorite is "It's a Wonderful Life")

To answer a few peoples question, I don't decorate for thanksgiving, I'm a very thankful person, and appreciate everyone I have and all I have daily, so I don't usually make a big thing of thanksgiving- I do usually celebrate it w/ family etc... just don't decorate. I use to decorate the day after thanksgiving, but it seemed to be over before I was done enjoying my tree etc.. so I started doing it earlier lol.
and hey HATS OFF TO CHRIS!!!!!!! hanging lights in October!!! got me beat bud lol

I love A Christmas Story, watch it every year. I also like The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (animated version and Jim Carrey's), Charlie Brown Christmas although technically not a movie, and Miracle on 34th street old and new. I love most versions of A Christmas Carol, some more than others. But I have to agree with Spat's take on George C Scott's version. Outstanding performance.

So I went to goodwill this weekend as I was traveling to see family. I found all the VHS movies for the cheap price of 1.00. Since I have my VCR still hooked up I took a look and WOW!!! They had every Disney Classic in mint condition for 1.00 each. I got the hard to finds like Black Cauldron, The Wind and The Willows and of Course Pete's Dragon. The best part is they also had tons of Christmas Titles they just set out the second I walked up there. I picked up: Its a Wonderful Life. Miracle on 34th St, Home Alone, Home Alone 2, How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Original Cartoon in Large Collectors Case), The Santa Clause, The Nightmare Before Christmas (In Collectors Case) Muppets Christmas Carol and my crown jewel find A CHRISTMAS STORY! How the Grinch Stole Christmas (both the cartoon and live-action film)

How is the Christmas Carol? Is it good?

I watched it last month sometime. I really enjoyed it. I'll probably watch it again as christmas approaches even closer.

My favorite xmas movies:
1. It's a Wonderful Life (Watch this every Christmas Eve night)
2. A Christmas Story (Watch it every christmas morning)
3. National Lampoon Christmas Vacation
4. ...Let me get back to you on this list. I have to think about it.

Does anyone remember that tv disney movie "It Nearly Wasn't Christmas"? Someone from Australia sent that to me on a dvd that they ripped from a vhs. Talk about nostalgic seeing that again. I'm not particularly huge on the movie itself, just the nostalgic factor it holds for me personally.

How is the Christmas Carol? Is it good?

It's good. The trailers were a little misleading--thankfully--and portrayed the film as something of a light-hearted comedy, but it's actually a serious (and fairly dark) adaptation of Dickens's novella. The language and story are faithful to the book.

As for the actual film itself, the animation is great and the performances are also very good. It's well-cast and Zemeckis really took advantage of the medium and did some things that he couldn't have done with live action.

"Scrooge" (1951 with Alastair Sim). My favorite by far.

I also like the 1984 George C. Scott version and "Muppet Christmas Carol" is always watched Chrismas Eve morning.

I am a bit of a "Christmas Carol" afficianado (fanatic?). I like to see all versions. Some are downright horrible...such as a TV version from the mid-1950s with Basil Rathbone as Marley's Ghost clanking around like Frankenstein. Ugh.

Regarding last year's version with Jim Carrey. At first I refused to see it. I figured "Jim Carrey as Scrooge? What a joke." Then I thought....the heck with it. I am supposedly a Christmas Carol fan, I'll go see it. I went into the theatre fully expecting to hate it.

I was wrong.

I was more than pleasantly surprised how good it was. I just bought the 3D/Blu-Ray version yesterday. It will take its rightful place among my holiday video collection. It started a little slow..and that ridiculous and over-long "chase" scene with a miniature Scrooge was flat-out stupid....but overall I give it a hearty two thumbs up.

All reasonable people know it's the best adaptation. There is one here who hasn't come to this realization yet. He knows who he is, LOL.

Yeah, that's kind of how I see myself, actually. I love the story and read the book every Christmas. I've also seen live theatrical adaptations in three cities. And I watch several film versions every year. I have intentionally avoided some versions of ACC though just based on reputation alone . . . like the Rathbone version that you mentioned.

I agree: the chase scene was unncessary and out of tone with the rest of the film. The depiction of the Ghost of Christmas Past was also just. . . . odd. They are forgivable lapses, though. As I said above, I thought that overall it was a very good adaptation.

Thus far, of the ones I've seen, the essential versions of ACC are:

1951 w/ Sim
1984 w/ Scott
1999 w/ Stewart
2009 w/ Carrey

The Muppets Christmas Carol is also fun and so is Mickey's, but they're too far outside of the coventional scope for them to be considered serious adaptations. I'll also watch the '38 version if it's on TV but I'm not going out of my way for it.

SPX, I pretty much agree with you on your rankings.

I haven't seen the '38 version in years and it is one of the few I do not own on DVD. The '35 version isn't that good either, but it has kind of grown on me over the years. I like how they show Tiny Tim's dead body...something that is in the book but is rarely shown on film.

The Patrick Stewart version is one I didn't care for the first time I saw it...but it is actually pretty good and I appreciate it more and more every year.

Muppet Christmas Carol....we still watch that because of our daughter. She has always been a big Muppet fan (still is, at age 32). We got into the habit of watching it Christmas Eve morning when she was still at home, and we just continued it after she grew up and moved out. She still watches it herself on Christmas Eve morning!

Thanks for the tip on the GCS/blue-ray.

I guess mine would be the live version of "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas", even though I think that movie could have been a lot better. Too bad Tim Burton didn't direct it.

Second choice would be the new "Christmas Carol". I thought the scenes where he shrank in size were stupid too, but the rest of it was great.

Just saw Heidi(1937) again. I guess I'm an old geezer who never grew up, but I love the movie. Loved it as a kid. Kids don't like this kind of movie anymore, no special effects, CGI, or 3D, unless they're old kids like me.
