So what do people use outside for fake snow on the ground? I know you can use batting and wrinkle it up but doesn't that kill the grass or do you just wait to put it out until the grass is dormant and it doesn't affect it??? Curious because hubby and I are working on an ice skating prop that we want to surround a blue light pond with snow for.

Some suggested using white sand.

How big of the area is it I would think that the batting would fly away with the wind or get dirty quick with leaves and other debris. have you thought of using styrofoam, might be easier to tie down.

How about white sheets? be a lot less expensive in the long run.

That fake snow is finely ground acrylic polyacrylamide if you buy Soil Moist it's WAY cheaper, but it comes in crystal form and would need to be ground down into smaller sizes to look like snow when moistened. Be careful adding synthetic substances into your ecosystem! I work in the film industry and there are lots of laws that cover snow dressing and it's impact. We use cotton batt as mentioned and biodegradable potato flakes.

Snow?, whats that? We see snow once in a blue moon down here in the gulf.
The few times I have done props with fake snow, I just used sheets.

I was on a film set recently and I asked what they were using for snow. The guy was austrailian, so may have misunderstood him....but he said Pipa? (Maybe paper?) Anyway, I couldn't find a thing on it.

Ickie- check out the link I added above it has everything you could need for snow dressing including paper snow, it's biodegradable so it gets it's fair share of screen time.

I'll bet that was it, Sandy! Thanks! They used that when I was working on Fred Claus.
Lilly, usually I'm better than average figuring words with accents out- but this time it confused me for a good long time!
