I still have a stocking that my aunt knitted for me when I was around 4 years old, and have hung it for the past 32 years. When my wife and I got married, she made a matching one for her (although hers has a Mrs. Claus on it and not Santa). We still do stuff small (usually gag) gifts in there every year.

Anyone else have or do the same?

My partner also has a knitted stocking from the dawn of time <ouch! I can feel the slap on the head from the other room>. I made one with the same design about 15 years ago and we always fill them for each other. She'll put anything she can fit into mine. I always give her the small unwrapped kind of stuff my mom used to put in ours - candy, chapstick, small toy or novelty. And an orange, got to put an orange in the stocking. Fresh citrus fruit in the dead of winter was a big treat when I was a kid growing up in Pennsylvania. And a dime, although Susan increased it to a quarter when I started collecting the state quarters a few years ago.

My Oma used to make a knitted stocking for everyone in our family when they were born. I have one for myself, (husband kept his own baby one), and one for my eldest. Unfortunatly, her eye problems got so bad, she can barely see a thing now, and even a few years ago was unable to make one for my youngest. I do have her own written pattern, though, so after I get it from my mom and type it, I'm going to give it to my MIL to try to do.
As far as what we put in -- candy, a toothbrush (must), lotto tickets (must), and other small things. Sometimes wrap stuff to put in, but mostly b/c little eyes peek!

My dad brought stockings from Hawaii for me and my brother and sister. That was back around 1965, we still use them. Hubby still has his from when he was a child, but it's too small for all the stuff Santa likes to put in it so I bought him a bigger one. 4 or 5 years ago I bought the boys stockings in their favorite colors, purple, blue and green, and we decorated the tree using their colors. Santa stuffs so much stuff in their stockings he uses the stocking and a spot under their stockings to put it all.

I have a stocking that, was store bought in the early sixties,, with a picure of santa on it, that my dad took glitter and out lines the pictures on it, and added my name to the top, did one for my brother too, amazingly most of the glitter is still on it.

When growing up, we got comic books, nuts, oranges and toothbrishes in ours with the occasional candy. We never had a fireplace, so we hung them from the piano. heh

I'm still a traditionalist with stocking though. I love the plain red with white fur look. The new fangled spiderman ones et al., don't make it for me.

We use the old traditional red and white fur stocking. We hang them over the fireplace one for each of the children and one for "mommy" and one for "daddy"....My mother started wrapping all the little stocking stuffers- so I still do wrap all the stocking stuffers ( i know its crazy - hubby hates it) .

We have stockings, too. A relative made this really cool "stocking holder" for them (I'll have to upload pics some time!) and we always put cards and small gifts in eachother's.

Edit: Here is the stocking holder I was talking about (ignore the ugly background. Our basement isn't very pretty :p)

what a cool stocking holder! I am one of the ones that don't know where to hang the stockings, I have used a variety of ways, but I like that!

We used to have the standark red felt with white cuff inexpensive stockings until our first Christmas here.

Then I made a set of stockings that I love. They are green/red plaid and red w/ holly leaf. Two have the plaid for stocking/holly for cuff and the other two are holly for stocking/plaid for cuff.

I bought enough fabric with the intention of making a matching tree skirt, which I haven't done yet!!!! Hopefully I'll get that done this year!

I inherited a knitted stocking made by my mother-in-law when I spent my first christmas here. However we have found that the stockings are not big enough to hold the multitude of stocking stuffers that we get each other, so for the first year this year we will be using felt sacks that we bought in last year's Michaels sale. The stockings will still be used though as the look great hanging from the fireplace mantle.
